Drinking water is important no matter what stage of life you’re in. We need it to stay alive! That’s why it’s crucial to make sure you’re drinking enough of it, especially if you’re trying to conceive, going through IVF, pregnant, or breastfeeding. Surprisingly, a lot of people have a hard time drinking enough water, so I’m here to help you achieve your wildest water drinking dreams! I’m serious, though. Drink more water.

Humans need roughly half their body weight in ounces per day to stay properly hydrated. When you are pregnant or trying to conceive the amount grows by another 50% to help your body absorb those prenatal vitamins and transport vitamins, minerals and hormones to the blood cells. Those nutrient-rich blood cells are what reach the placenta, and ultimately your baby, ensuring proper fetal nutrition and growth. Also, water is important to help transport those nutrients and hormones to your uterus while trying to conceive, and it helps contribute to making enough nutritious milk for your baby when breastfeeding.

It is best to drink purified (not distilled) water from glass or aluminum containers, because plastic water bottles have unnecessary hormones and chemicals that can make their way into your body. But, if you only have plastic water bottles, it is better to drink from BPA/toxin-free plastic than not at all. This 40 oz. Tumbler with a Handle and Straw is extremely popular. My go-to is a 40 oz. Hydroflask Water Bottle with a Straw Lid. It is 40 oz., which means I only have to fill it twice a day and drink two to get my recommended 80oz. of water I need during my pregnancy. I love that both options are aluminum and free of chemicals. And, the straw lid is super easy to drink from.

So, how do you make sure you drink enough water during the day? Here are some helpful tips and products, as well as some apps that will remind you to stay hydrated and help you track your water intake.

Make It Taste Good

A lot of people claim that they just plain don’t like water. For those of you that would just rather drink something else, there are a lot of products out there to help make your water taste good. There are a lot of ways to infuse flavor into your water to make it taste better and keep it interesting. Here are some amazing Fruit Infusing Water Bottles that make drinking water a little more tasty:

Make it Sparkle

These days I drink more sparkling water than regular water. I purchased a Sodastream last year, that I use daily for fresh sparkling water. You can easily add fresh fruit or fruit juice to add some flavor, or I like to just drink it plain. I found this Aluminum Water Bottle made specifically for Sodastream, and it has made all the difference in how much water I drink.

Make it Fun

  • Challenge a friend to drink more water. It is always more fun (and more motivating) if you’re doing a challenge with someone else. Motivating each other will help you stay on track.
  • Buy a Fun Water Bottle with a motivating or funny saying on it to help remind you to stay hydrated. These Water Bottles are fun, and even help you track just how much water you are drinking.
  • Straws are easier. I drink SO much more water if I am drinking out of a straw. This 40 oz. Tumbler with a handle fits in your car cupholder. Or I love the Hydrofask Water Bottle with a straw lid, or any Straw Lid Water Bottle.
  • Keep it cool. Yeti mugs and cups are fantastic at keeping your water super cold and icy if that’s your thing. They are guaranteed to keep your water ice cold.

Keep it Readily Available

  • You’re more likely to drink water if it’s right there readily available, right? That’s why I like to have an easy way to carry my water bottle or have a bottle that fits in your purse. Keep a few different bottles around (one by your bed, one on your desk, etc.) That way you’re always reminded to drink it because it is there.

Track Your Intake

  • A lot of water bottles now have a way to track your intake and remind you when to drink more water printed right on the bottle. These Water Bottles track how much you’ve had, and tell you exactly what time to drink it by. Motivating and easy!
  • I love this idea! This Smart Light Water Bottle flashes a light to remind you to drink water. It also syncs with an app on your phone to track your water intake and keep you hydrated.
